Intent

At Marden Vale CE Primary Academy PSHE is an important thread through all we do and this enables our pupils to become mindful, confident and responsible members of society who understand how to live healthy lives. Through the PSHE curriculum we aim to help the children understand how they are developing personally, socially and spiritually. Through a whole school approach to PSHE children will be equipped to build resilience and nurture their physical and mental health. They will have a strong understanding of the diversity of our world, both within and beyond the immediate community. The children will have a better understanding of how they learn and how they can help themselves be ready for learning, and this in turn will translate to better learning behaviour and engagement throughout the curriculum.

Implementation

From FS2 to Year 6 pupils follow the Jigsaw scheme for PSHE, this whole school approach is reinforced with regular assemblies and end of “puzzle” products. Every year group works on the same puzzle at the same time but levelled accordingly.

Teachers may also supplement the curriculum with relevant additional content linked to pertinent issues raised within the class, local or world situations.

The Jigsaw scheme covers all the requirements of government guidance and outcomes. The philosophy of the scheme is about building positive self –image, a sense of identity and healthy relationship with self from which children can grow healthy relationships with others. The areas covered are

  • Being me in my world

  • Celebrating Difference

  • Dreams and Goals

  • Healthy Me

  • Relationships

  • Changing Me

As a Church of England school, all teaching of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) will be in the context of our Christian values. We will approach this aspect of our responsibility in a spirit of openness, co-operation and compassion.  We recognise the vital role of parents as children’s first educators and will seek to support them as much as possible. We will follow guidance from the policy as set out by Diocese of Salisbury Academy Trust.

Impact

Marden Vale pupils will show throughout their school life an ability to self- regulate emotions and know how to help themselves when this is difficult.

They will show a tolerance of differences and be welcoming of change.

They will show readiness to learn by understanding how this looks and how to prepare themselves for learning.

Children will show politeness and respect towards other people.

Children will leave Marden Vale as positive role models to the community.

Our new scheme of work

This year we have introduced an excellent new scheme across the school to deliver the PSHE curriculum. This is Jigsaw, which is a comprehensive scheme of learning including emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development for pupils aged 3 to 11.

Each year group has their own cuddly Jigsaw friend who joins them in their lessons. The children learn techniques for self calming and we use the chime bar each lesson to pause for a moment of quiet calm.

Every term we start with an assembly to introduce the theme (or puzzle) which is the same across the school at appropriate levels.
