Christopher Columbus - Year 4
Welcome to Columbus Class!
We are a year four class. There are two teachers who support all of our children, Mrs O'Brien who is in class for the first half of the week and Mrs Southgate who teaches on a Thursday and Friday. Last, but definitely not least, our fabulous teaching assistant Mrs Luker!
Who was Christopher Columbus?
In 1492 Columbus landed on an island of the Bahamas, the first European to do so. His initial goal was to find a quicker route to Asia from Europe. He is credited with the discovery of the New World because his voyage started the era of European colonialism in the Americas.
Earlier This Year
In Term two our lerning was driven by our History topic - Ancient Greece. We learnt about how the Ancient Greeks lived, worshipped and enjoyed sports. In English we studied the story of 'Theseus and The Minotaur'. This inspired lots of rich descriptions of terrible creatures!
We were really excited to welcome professional storyteller who ran a day's workshop with us and Dickens Class. She really brought the story to life and we enjoyed some acting too.
Value of the Term - Courage
" Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
We are using 'The Write Stuff' planning by Jane Consadine to sentence stack our writing. This term we will be writing a story based on 'Star in the Jar' by Sam Hay to inspire a stop animation film. We will also be writing a newspaper report.
We have continued to work on our writing key skills of spelling, and our children are learning and being tested on their spellings weekly. In grammar we will explore, word classes, fronted adverbials and senntence structure and much much more!
We teach reading daily and the children are practicing their retrieval and inference skills through comprehension activities.
In Maths this term we are learning about decimals, money and statistics. We will be developing our mastery skills through Power Maths
In Geography this term we will be continuing our study into the local area. We will be going on a field trip to look at different parts of our environment, collecting and studying the information we collect.
In RE we will be looking at Judaism and learning what symbols and stories help Jewish people remember their covenant with God.
In PE we will be developing our skills in Athletics ready for our study of the Olympics at the end of term.
