PUPILS TAKE THE CLASSROOM OUTDOORS

The Woodland Trust and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust helped pupils from Marden Vale in Calne to take the classroom outdoors on 22/11/17

The school successfully applied for a free pack of native saplings from the Trees for Schools programme. We also had a selection of Hedgerow plants.

The Woodland Trust and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust have helped pupils from across Wiltshire to take the classroom outdoors throughout November.

Trees for Schools is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and delivered in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Defra is supporting the Trust to deliver 400,000 trees for state-funded primary schools in England over four years.

The Woodland Trust’s Schools and Community Engagement Manager Karen Letten said:

Trees create inspiring learning spaces - natural, sustainable, and dynamic outdoor classrooms where pupils can mix mud with maths and spades with science while connecting with nature and having fun. It’s these lessons that the children will remember well into adulthood.”

Wiltshire Wildlife’s Trust Education Officer Gail Grimes said:

“We are delighted to be involved in helping schools make their school grounds more wildlife-friendly, while giving children the opportunity to get stuck into this fantastic project - literally stuck in, with their spades! Those trees they plant will grow alongside the children, providing an everlasting reminder of the wonder of nature and our connection to it.”

The Woodland Trust commissioned research shows that primary age children who plant trees felt that they were ‘doing their bit’ to help the environment and remember it as a significant experience.

A recent large scale Natural Connections study found children who experienced outdoor learning were more engaged, happier and healthier. Teachers said outdoor learning had a positive impact on their teaching practice and increased job satisfaction.

Schools can apply for Defra-funded tree packs by visiting the Woodland Trust website or searching online for ‘free trees’. http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/freetrees

“In Marden Vale Resource Base we have learned so much from this program. The children have a range of complex needs and so it’s important that the children access their education in a variety of ways as well as following the Christian values of our school. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time with the Woodland Trust and Gail. Many thanks.”

The Woodland Trust is the largest woodland conservation charity in the UK. It has over 500,000 supporters. It wants to see a UK rich in native woods and trees for people and wildlife.

The Trust has three key aims: i) protect ancient woodland which is rare, unique and irreplaceable, ii) restoration of damaged ancient woodland, bringing precious pieces of our natural history back to life, iii) plant native trees and woods with the aim of creating resilient landscapes for people and wildlife.

Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust now has over 1,000 sites in its care covering over 22,500 hectares. Access to its woods is free.
