Our new topic this half term is ‘Space’. With all the news about Tim Peake and the International Space station, as well as the new Star Wars film, we felt this would be an exciting topic.
All out topic work will be closely linked to learning in Literacy where the children will use non-fiction books to find out facts about different planets and living in space, discuss the key features of a non-fiction text and make their very own information book. They will also be writing our own space adventure stories.
Learning spellings and grammar will continue. They will continue to learn more of the spelling patterns for the vowel sounds.(E.g. a= ay=ai=a-e= ey= eigh) In grammar they will focus on the structure of sentences, past and present tense, learning about statements, questions and exclamations, as well as becoming familiar with the terms noun, verb and adjective. Different types of punctuation will also be taught including commas, apostrophes, exclamation marks and question marks.
This work will also be closely linked to developing Humanities skills where the children will be making maps and plans of our universe and of the planets. We might even invent our own planet. They will learn about the history of space travel and how it has changed over the last century, and then make predictions of what might happen in space during the children’s live time.
In Science the children will continue looking at the topic ‘Materials’. Learning experiences will include identifying different types of materials; sorting them into groups and describing them using scientific vocabulary; developing an understanding of natural and man-made materials; exploring magnets; looking at how water changes state and finally carrying out their own investigation with ice balloons. Please take a look at the science activities for this topic on www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips
If you have any resources at home which would enhance our topic work please label them and send in with your child to be returned at the end of this half term.
In all their numeracy activities the children will continue to be encouraged to solve problems in the context of numbers, measures or money. They will also be developing their understanding of fractions and learning to tell the time. They will describe the puzzle or problem in their own words or use numbers, practical resources or diagrams to help. The children already have their individual Numeracy targets but can develop a greater understanding in many real life situations e.g.
Looking at patterns in house numbers
Discussing and telling the time at key points in the day. (E.g. 6 o’clock is dinner time)
Weighing ingredients when baking and carrying shopping
Adding up when looking at prices in the supermarket.
Looking at real life shapes, all around us
Walking to and from school could include practice in recall of addition and subtraction facts.
Homework in Year 2
Alongside reading as much as possible at home, children in Year 2 have weekly comprehension to complete. These will be related to your child’s reading ability and should help their understanding of what they have read. Please help them to find the answers to questions. If you feel the comprehension is too easy or tricky for your child, please write a note in the back of the learning log so that we can adjust this.
Spellings will continue to be taught in school. Should you wish to have spelling sent home each week please let the teacher know.
A weekly Mathematics will be sent out in the children’s homework books on a Friday to reinforce and support the work completed in class. Please encourage the children to complete this short task and return it to the homework box by Thursday morning at the latest. Please feel free to comment on the tasks set as homework. It is always helpful to know if the children find the work particularly challenging or enjoyable.
- Please ensure your child has their correct PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled.
- If you have any messages please write them in your child’s reading record or feel free to speak directly to us.
- The children can access their own water throughout the day and have fruit at snack time.
- Your child’s reading books are changed, by them, at least 3 times per week. If you feel that they have had a book for too long please let us know.
- Space lab is visiting on March 2nd. Please make sure you have filled in the permission form and have paid your contribution by February 12th
I am looking forward to all the exciting events this half term has to offer!
Year 2 went to the Natural History Museum for a fantastic day out to study this amazing collection. It was a fantastic day out and the children learned so much and had great fun too.
