Year 1 Curriculum Statement

“Wriggle and Crawl”

In term 6 we are learning all about minibeasts. We will be taking part in Forest school on Monday afternoons in our Wildlife area with Mr Sawyer and we will be using keys to identify the bugs we find. We are really looking forward to toasting marshmallows and going pond dipping too. We will be creating music to simulate the movement of the creepy crawlies and even hatching our own butterflies in the classroom.

“Big Wide World”

In term 5, we are focusing our learning on the world around us. Where the continents are, how the weather is different in the northern and southern hemispheres. We will compare where we live to Rio in Brazil and Quito in Ecuador. We are going to be learning some Samba moves, making bright colourful Carnival masks and learning some useful Portuguese phrases.

Our Fabulous Banquet!

Take a look at the fantastic cake whipped up by Mrs Jeary and her talented team! Surely fit for any royal table!

We enjoyed learning a bit more about the lives of knights this afternoon, and then ate sumptuous treats including at least two slices each of a castle themed cake! The tables were dressed in regal purple and gold, and we wore jewelled crowns designed and made by ourselves. It really was a memorable way of finishing off our Turrets and Tiaras topic.

Educational Visit to the Natural History Museum and the Pitt Rivers Collection

We had an amazing day out at the Oxford Natural History Museum! There was so much to see including some very scary dinosaur skeletons that towered high above our heads. They must have been an awesome sight when they walked the earth. Other highlights included casts of real dinosaur footprints and fossilised eggs. The children were fascinated by the real dinosaur poo that they were allowed to handle. It was so old that it had turned to stone but you could still see the remains of a dinosaur meal inside it! We also saw fossils that have been found on the beach at Lyme Regis which was very interesting because we are now finding out more about Mary Anning, expert fossil finder of the 19th century!

Dinosaurs and Fossils

We are on a very long journey back through time in Year 1! Millions of years, in fact. The children are really enthusiastic about finding out all about dinosaurs. We have examined some very old fossils and bones using magnifying glasses to see the smaller details really clearly. Our shared area is turning into a jungle environment, similar to where some dinosaurs would have lived. We have even found dinosaur eggs outside our classroom door! It is very exciting to be finding out about such huge and fearsome looking creatures! Our writing and maths learning has also been liked to our topic and we have enjoyed creating our versions of the ‘Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs’ stories. We have also been out to the playground to measure exactly how long a brontosaurus was (about 42m) and how tall (about 7m). We can’t wait to find out more-watch this space!
